For the longest time, one of the biggest taboos of interior design was thought to be mixing different wood tones. However, mixing wood tones isn’t something to be dismissive of. It’s actually one of the more inventive ways to make a space look full and vibrant. Here at Flawless Floors, a hardwood flooring company in Baltimore, MD, we share our secrets for how to mix wood tones effectively.

How To Mix Wood Tones Effectively

There are so many components to a room that can make or break the design. When you ordered that dining room table online but it’s a different tone than the picture. Or perhaps that antique armoire that your parents gave you that you could never get rid of, but it’s darker than any of the other furniture. The good news is that all of these components can and will work together to give any room of your home cohesion and depth. Here are a few tips on making that happen:

Benefits of Wood Floors

Choose A Dominant Wood

The most important thing to decide is what wood tone will serve as the dominant tone.. This is a very simple decision if you have hardwood floors. However, those without hardwood floors will need to take a look at the largest piece of wood furniture in the room. This will be your foundation that you base all other tones off of. You need to make sure that you are mindful of that dominant tone when bringing other furniture into the space.

Undertones

Another important thing to be mindful of when mixing wood tones is matching undertones. Is your dominant tone warm, neutral, or cool? Whatever the answer, your furniture should follow suit. This way, even if your furniture are different tones, they still look like they’re part of the same family.

Grains and Finishes

One of the easier ways to create cohesion with your tones is the use of grains or finishes. This way, if your furniture has different midtones or may be a little too different from the floor, having the same finish will make up for it.

Create Contrast

When putting together any space, it is always important to incorporate contrast. When mixing wood tones, this is especially important. The last thing you want is for your room to feel overwhelming or too busy. The best way to counteract  this is by bringing in pieces that are different materials. Experiment with an area rug, or perhaps a nice wallpaper. If you’re designing a kitchen, use your appliances and hardware to add contrast.

This is one of the more exciting parts of the process because there are so many different ways to put a room together. Remember to be creative and have fun with it!
